Our Approach to Otology & Neurotology
Montefiore Einstein Otology and Neurotology is recognized for its expertise in diagnosing and treating conditions that impact hearing, balance and facial nerve function. Our fellowship-trained and board certified neurotologists provide specialized care for a range of conditions, from hearing loss and Ménière’s disease to complex cases such as acoustic neuromas and cholesteatomas. Using advanced diagnostic tools and treatment options, we address both routine and intricate challenges to improve patients’ quality of life and overall health. We’re ranked in the top 1% of all hospitals in the nation for ear, nose, and throat care, according to U.S. News & World Report.
Our multidisciplinary team collaborates with experts in audiology, physical medicine, head and neck surgery and neurosurgery to develop personalized care plans. These plans incorporate a combination of medical therapies and advanced surgical interventions, including skull base surgery for tumors and procedures to restore balance function. We are at the forefront of research, partnering with neuroscientists to explore central auditory conditions such as tinnitus and difficulties with hearing in complex environments.
Treatments & Diagnostics
Montefiore Einstein’s Otology and Neurotology team provides comprehensive medical and surgical care for all conditions affecting the ear and adjacent skull base. Our expertise includes the evaluation and treatment of hearing loss (including bone-anchored hearing aid solutions, cochlear implantation and stapes surgery), chronic ear infections, facial nerve disorders and skull base tumors (such as paragangliomas and vestibular schwannomas). We also specialize in caring for patients with vestibular disorders, such as Ménière’s disease and superior semicircular canal dehiscence syndrome. We take a multidisciplinary approach to patient care, harnessing the diverse expertise of otologists, audiologists, neurosurgeons and physical therapists to ensure that patients receive the most effective treatments tailored to their individual needs.
Otology & Neurotology Research
Montefiore Einstein Otology and Neurotology is committed to advancing care for ear and balance disorders through innovative translational research. This work is bolstered by longstanding, active collaborations with the Department of Neuroscience. Current areas of active research include studies examining the neural bases of auditory information processing in adults and children, as well as how these processes are disrupted in disease states such as neurodevelopmental disorders, hearing loss and tinnitus (ringing in the ears). We are also working on developing and testing novel treatment approaches for bothersome tinnitus. This state-of-the-art research ensures that Montefiore Einstein is at the cutting edge of emergent science, technology and therapeutic development.
Recently, Director of the Hutchinson/Weiler Division and Associate Professor of Otorhinolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery and Neurological Surgery Howard Moskowitz, MD, PhD, has been awarded a $60,000 grant, funded by Autism Speaks with support from Royal Arch Research Assistance, to lead a pilot research study exploring why children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) often have hearing problems and how they may be linked to central auditory processing disorder (CAPD). The study will assess the feasibility of a novel approach intended to be used in a larger study.
