The Montefiore Einstein Institute for Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIMIS) is the most comprehensive, state-of-the-art facility of its kind in the tri-state area, dedicated to advancing the science and practice of minimally invasive surgery (MIS). As a premier destination for innovation in laparoscopic, endoscopic and robotic surgery, MIMIS pioneers the development and refinement of next-generation MIS techniques. In partnership with the Department of Surgery, our Department collaborates through MIMIS to advance surgical innovation, foster multidisciplinary research and promote specialized skills development in MIGS. Our world-renowned testing and evaluation site provides access to the latest tools and newly emerging technologies—many of which are not yet widely available—to improve surgical precision, enhance patient safety and optimize outcomes.

We offer access to the latest diagnostics and treatments for the prevention, detection and management of the full range of gynecologic conditions.

To tailor treatment plans and enhance surgical precision, we use advanced imaging technologies, including high-resolution 3T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computed tomography (CT), 3D and 4D pelvic ultrasound, positron emission tomography (PET) and saline infusion sonohysterography (SIS) for enhanced uterine evaluation. When imaging is inconclusive, diagnostic laparoscopy may be used ​​to confirm the diagnosis of underlying conditions.

To facilitate precision care planning, we integrate artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning for outcomes analysis and risk prediction. We also offer the latest genetic and genomic testing, including next-generation sequencing, molecular profiling and hereditary cancer panel testing, such as BRCA1 and BRCA2 analysis, to assess inherited risk for breast, ovarian and related gynecologic cancers. This guides personalized surveillance, prevention and surgical decisions, such as prophylactic oophorectomy.

We offer a comprehensive suite of advanced in-office diagnostic and minimally invasive therapeutic procedures, eliminating the need for hospital-based surgery or general anesthesia and allowing for faster recovery. Supported by real-time imaging, digital cervicography and AI-assisted diagnostics, our in-office services facilitate early detection, targeted treatment and improved patient comfort—all delivered in a streamlined, outpatient setting. ​​When surgery is required, we specialize in advanced laparoscopic, hysteroscopic, vaginal and robot-assisted techniques that promote faster recovery and minimize postoperative pain.

We use advanced technologies—including 3D laparoscopic visualization, fluorescence imaging with indocyanine green (ICG) for perfusion mapping in robotic surgery, as well as intraoperative ultrasound and near-infrared imaging—to enhance precision, safety and real-time decision-making during surgery.

At the forefront of newly emerging surgical innovation, we also offer the latest advances in minimally invasive techniques such as natural orifice specimen extraction (NOSE) and vaginal natural orifice transluminal endoscopic surgery (vNOTES)—a “scarless” approach performed through the vaginal canal.

Our expertise spans the full range of gynecologic procedures, including uterine-sparing and fertility-preserving surgeries. Many of these procedures are performed on an outpatient basis and incorporate ERAS protocols and advanced multimodal pain management strategies to reduce opioid use, accelerate recovery and enhance the overall patient care experience. We are leading collaborative research and spearheading numerous studies and clinical trials, some of which are funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), translating novel scientific discoveries into new diagnostics and treatments to help improve clinical outcomes. Our research spans basic, translational and clinical science, with a focus on advancing the understanding and management of complex gynecologic and women’s health conditions. Core areas of investigation include the development of novel surgical technologies and techniques, improvement of perioperative outcomes (particularly the reduction of surgical site infections in gynecologic surgery), enhancement of the patient experience across the surgical care continuum and clinical applications of emerging approaches such as vNOTES. Additional research efforts explore the integration of surgical ergonomics education within minimally invasive gynecologic skills training to improve surgeon well-being and optimize technical performance.
