Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists

At Montefiore Einstein Anesthesiology, our certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs) all hold master’s or doctoral degrees from accredited programs in nurse anesthesia, as recognized by the Council on Accreditation of Nurse Anesthesia Education Programs (COA). Our nurse anesthetists are certified by the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists (NBCRNA) and earn biannual certification in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS). Montefiore Einstein’s nurse anesthetists work with anesthesiologists, surgeons, perioperative nursing staff and doctors from a wide variety of specialties to provide anesthesia to all patient populations.

Our CRNAs deliver safe, comprehensive, expert anesthesia care for a range of surgical and procedural cases in a highly supportive and collaborative environment. Our expert team of nurse anesthetists works in a medical direction care team model to provide comprehensive, patient-centered anesthesia care across settings.

Our CRNA team provides numerous services to ensure each patient’s safety and comfort, including:

• Administering intravenous and inhaled anesthesia
• Monitoring surgical patients while under general anesthesia or monitored anesthesia care (MAC), which is a combination of local anesthesia, sedation and analgesia
• Oversight of intraoperative patients by supervising all surgical protocols, including monitor adjustments, room temperature regulation and equipment placement
• Following postoperative care and anesthesia procedures in the Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU) alongside an attending anesthesiologist

Our CRNAs are active members of departmental committees, such as the Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Committee, and are dedicated to continually improving patient care throughout the perioperative period. Together with their physician colleagues, our CRNAs regularly work on quality improvement initiatives such as reviewing case investigations and developing new policies that enhance patient safety and improve outcomes. As part of the committee, our CRNAs have the opportunity to collaborate with multidisciplinary colleagues in the Montefiore Einstein Quality Department and to shape future institutional policies that continually raise the bar for our standard of care.

Our CRNAs train and mentor student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs) from multiple schools in the tristate area, including the Rutgers School of Nursing and the Columbia University School of Nursing. During their clinical rotations at Montefiore Einstein, SRNAs receive hands-on training on a variety of cases and learn how to provide exemplary care throughout the perioperative period. Each Montefiore Einstein campus has a designated SRNA Clinical Coordinator who organizes the rotations and assigns each student a preceptor to provide comprehensive training within the medical direction care team model.
