Eating Disorders Program at Montefiore Einstein

About Our Program

The Eating Disorders Program at Montefiore Einstein (EDPM) is an outpatient program that provides evidence-based care for children and adolescents presenting with anorexia, bulimia, avoidant-restrictive food intake disorder and other eating disorders. The EDPM understands that identifying the first signs and symptoms of eating disorders may help to avoid serious health consequences and even death.

Working in partnership with the Department of Adolescent Medicine at the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM), the Moses Child Outpatient Psychiatry Division (COPD) provides adolescent patients between the ages of 4 and 23 with access to psychiatrists, psychologists and social workers who provide compassionate, family-centered care strengthened by research-based treatments. Our team of experts actively listens to you and your child to understand how we can best help. Through intimate sessions with patients and parents, we collaborate to identify the cause of any issues and implement a constructive solution.

Our customized, compassionate treatment is available for a range of psychiatric and neurological conditions, issues, disorders and illnesses, with several specialty services that aim to address specific mental and behavioral health issues, including eating disorders. Eating disorders can affect people of all ages, racial or ethnic backgrounds, body weights and genders. Eating disorders frequently appear during the teen years or young adulthood but may also develop during childhood or later in life. Aside from problems with food, eating disorders impact body image and self-esteem. Adolescents struggling with eating disorders need specialized medical and mental health care for the best chance at a complete recovery.

CHAM is recognized as one of the nation’s best, according to U.S. News & World Report. As a premier academic children’s hospital, CHAM is internationally renowned for its clinical excellence, innovative research and commitment to training the next generation of pediatricians and pediatric subspecialists.

Since its opening in 2001, CHAM’s goal has been to provide children with the best opportunity to lead active and healthy lives and realize their full potential. To achieve this goal, we’ve recruited some of the world’s leading pediatric specialists and child health investigators and implemented the latest medical technologies to deliver the highest quality and safest healthcare with compassion and sensitivity. We are well-prepared to meet the needs of the children, families and communities we serve through our pediatric emergency department, outpatient clinics, school health clinics and Montefiore Einstein’s innovative community outreach initiatives.

Our Services

The Eating Disorder Program is a collaborative effort between CHAM and Child Psychiatry to ensure thorough patient care planning. Eligible patients begin with a comprehensive medical evaluation by a physician, followed by the EDPM team’s ongoing treatment that addresses individualized recovery goals. The multidisciplinary team includes a physician, psychiatrist, social worker and a dietician.

We care for patients with anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, avoidant restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) and sub-threshold disorders. Most of our patients are seen in the outpatient clinic, while those who require medical stabilization are hospitalized in our inpatient unit.

Our experts know that it is essential to seek treatment early for eating disorders, as those with eating disorders are at higher risk for suicide and medical complications. Our care teams address co-occurring mental disorders (such as depression, anxiety or substance use disorders) with treatment plans that may include one or more of the following modalities proven to help patients learn how to identify distorted or unhelpful thinking patterns and recognize and change inaccurate beliefs:

  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)
  • Family-based treatment (FBT)
  • Individual, group and family psychotherapy
  • Medical care and monitoring
  • Medications
  • Nutritional counseling
