Sports Mental Health & Performance Institute

About Our Program

Montefiore Einstein is the official hospital of the New York Yankees and New York City FC. In our unique role, we recognize the vital importance of mental health in enabling athletes to reach their highest potential both on the field and in their personal lives. To address this need, we established the Sports Mental Health & Performance Institute, dedicated to promoting the mental well-being of athletes at all levels––from high school to Olympic and professional sports.

The Montefiore Einstein Sports Mental Health & Performance Institute’s comprehensive approach combines evidence-based clinical services for athletes, mental health research, clinical training for the next generation of sports mental health practitioners and advocacy for greater mental health awareness across sports.

Our Services

The Sports Mental Health & Performance Institute at Montefiore Einstein offers a range of specialty services to help athletes and their support networks work through mental health challenges.

Outpatient Mental Health Services
Through in-person or HIPAA-compliant virtual therapy sessions, we provide evidence-based interventions for the evaluation and management of performance-related anxiety, depressive disorders, recovery from injury and other mental health issues commonly seen in competitive sports.

Concussion Management
Our multidisciplinary team of clinicians specializes in assessing and managing sports-related concussions. Services include cognitive, psychological and neurological evaluations, educating athletes on concussion recovery and ensuring required support for those who experience prolonged symptoms.

Team & Coach Consultations
In addition to individualized services for athletes, we also provide consultation services to teams and coaches interested in more effectively enhancing the mental performance and overall well-being of their athletes and staff. Customized programs and services for sports organizations include:

  • Design and establishment of a mental health crisis and emergency action plan unique for each organization
  • Family-related mental health services
  • Mental health first aid training for coaches and support staff
  • Neuropsychological evaluation, such as for attention-deficit concerns and concussion management
