General Practice Dentistry Residency Program

The experience of being a general practice resident (GPR) is invaluable. It is, however, very challenging. It offers an opportunity for total immersion into the life of a hospital resident, managing patients whose oral health is part of their total health status. It also serves to interrelate your activities with colleagues in dentistry, medicine, and other allied health practitioners.

The Department of Dentistry provides both outpatient and inpatient care. There are three training sites where residents will perform comprehensive care: Blondell, Broadway and Prospect. Up to 52 first-year positions are available. Second-year resident positions are also available in endodontics and advanced prosthodontic training. General practice residents function as associates of the attendings and provide appropriate care to their assigned patients. Case planning guidance and technical assistance help the resident grow in experience and confidence.

Our facilities afford an excellent opportunity to learn and practice all phases of general dentistry under the direction of highly accomplished practitioners. In addition to digital radiography and digital record keeping in EPIC, residents can expect to undergo training using intraoral scanning and rotary endodontic systems.

The Educational Program

The focus of this residency is to train a competent general dentist to provide comprehensive care to all patients. This program encompasses the entire spectrum of dentistry, oral surgery, fixed and removable prosthetics, periodontics and endodontics. Residents are encouraged to work with Oral Surgery for opportunities to place implants that can be restored at each of the three home sites — Blondell, Prospect and Broadway. Our three hospitals (Weiler, Moses Campus and North Division) provide outpatient and inpatient care with resident on-call assignments as well as patient consults. The three clinical and education training sites have similar in patient populations and patient care needs and are all located in the Bronx. The Department has modern, state-of-the-art clinics that are new or recently remodeled. Residents provide care to patients under the supervision of experienced general dentists as well as specialists in other dental specialties. By working alongside the faculty while treating your own patients, you will grow in experience and confidence.

The patient population includes medically compromised and special needs patients, in addition to the community population that uses the hospital for their health services. Lectures and seminars are held most days via Zoom before and/or after regular clinic hours.

Rotations

  • Two-week assignment in the Department of Anesthesiology
  • Simulated session in airway management
  • A rotation in the Emergency Department (ED) to train residents in the evaluation of patients with medical emergencies
  • Two-week rotation in advanced prosthodontics/implant restoration
  • One-week rotation in the Division of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS) with an option to request it as an additional elective
  • Five-week operating room (OR) rotation to treat patients with special needs

The GPR is responsible for maxillofacial trauma on even on-call assignments. (Comprehensive dental care is not provided at night.) The resident learns firsthand how to assess and treat dental and facial trauma and emergencies. They are responsible for covering emergencies at each of the three hospitals, Moses Campus or Weiler Campus. Oral and maxillofacial surgery and pediatric dentistry residents provide backup, advice and assistance when needed. The on-call schedule requires you to be physically present in the hospital and averages one or two assignments per month. Residents are required to stay on-site when they are on call, and overnight accommodations are available.

During the course of your residency at Montefiore, you will have an opportunity to gain knowledge, skill and expertise in the full range of dentistry:

  • Oral and maxillofacial surgery
  • Fixed and removable prosthetics
  • Operative dentistry
  • Periodontics
  • Endodontics

There are several clinical sites for general practice residency education and training. Our three hospitals (Weiler, Moses Campus and North Division) include outpatient and inpatient care with resident on-call assignments as well as availability for patient consults. The three clinical and education training sites of Blondell, Prospect and Broadway have similar patient populations and patient care needs and are all located in the Bronx.

Residents can expect medical rotations in Emergency Medicine and Anesthesiology, as per ADA standards, as well as experiences in the OR.

Public Health

An important part of our mission at the Montefiore Dental Department is to provide superior healthcare services for underserved populations of the Bronx. Through participation in the community service component of our program, you will have an opportunity to see firsthand how good dental care can improve lives and enhance the community. You will gain valuable experience with and exposure to public health dentistry within a community health context.

Applications

The program requires a Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) application and participates in the National Matching Service. The Program Match Number is 9785. It is the applicant’s responsibility to register for the match.

The application deadline for general practice is in the preceding December for the academic year beginning July 1.

The Montefiore Concentration in Endodontics is a GPR-2 concentration. Candidates are required to have a GPR-1 or Advanced Education in General Dentistry (AEGD) to be considered. The program runs annually from July 1 to June 30.

Goals: The program is designed to give the resident the opportunity to train in a practice that simulates an endodontic office. The residents complete between 100 and 200 cases per calendar year. Residents work closely with the Pediatric Dentistry Department, treating children (trauma, apexification and apexogenesis).

Those not seeking a specialty position will gain competency in non-surgical root canal treatment (RCT). These skills will enhance their curriculum vitae (CV) and improve their chances of securing employment.

For those who aspire to attain an endodontic postgraduate (PG) position, it will strengthen their chances of gaining admission. In addition, they will be able to go into a postgraduate program with a strong skill set that will greatly augment their endodontic journey.
