Head and Neck Surgery - Second Year

This is a PGY-5 or PGY-7 rotation providing the residents with a one-month head and neck experience.

The goals of this rotation are:

1. Develop a thorough understanding of head and neck anatomy.
2. To become familiar with the otolaryngologic evaluation of common problems in the head and neck.
3. To expose plastic surgery residents to evaluation and treatment of patients with head and neck pathology.
4. To participate in the treatment and extirpative operative procedures of patients with head and neck cancers, as well as with reconstructive options in head and neck surgery. 

At the conclusion of the rotation, the resident should have an understanding of:

1. The evaluation of facial soft tissue injury including underlying structures (ducts, nerve, and vascular).
2. Be familiar with malignant head and neck neoplasms, with particular emphasis on the epidemiology, pathology, biologic behavior, clinical presentation, evaluation, diagnosis, staging, and basic management of malignant tumors of the pharynx, nasopharynx, larynx, parotid, and other salivary glands.
3. Know basic principles of extirpative surgery for malignant tumors of the head and neck area, and is generally aware of reconstruction and restoration for complex functions and aesthetics.
4. Provide comprehensive perioperative care for patients head and neck neoplasms, craniomaxillofacial trauma, or congenital problems of the craniomaxillofacial.
