What Is an Earache?
Earache, or ear pain, is often categorized as primary pain (originating in the ear) or secondary pain (caused by issues outside the ear). Commonly associated with infections, injuries or obstructions, earaches can range in severity from mild discomfort to intense, persistent pain. Identifying the underlying cause is crucial for effective treatment.
Causes of Earache
Earaches may result from a variety of causes, depending on primary or secondary origin, including:
Primary ear pain:
- Barotrauma (sudden air or water pressure changes)
- Earwax buildup or blockage
- Eustachian tube dysfunction (blockage between the inner ear and throat)
- Foreign objects in the ear
- Infections (swimmer’s ear, middle or inner ear infections)
- Ruptured eardrum
Secondary ear pain:
- Allergies or sinusitis
- Dental issues, such as toothaches or grinding
- GERD (chronic acid reflux)
- Sore throat or tonsillitis
- Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders
Signs & Symptoms of Earaches
Symptoms of earache vary depending on the underlying cause and may include:
- Difficulty hearing or muffled sounds
- Fever or drainage from the ear (infection)
- Jaw pain or tenderness near the ear
- Persistent discomfort lasting more than a few days
- Sensation of fullness or pressure in the ear
- Sharp, dull or throbbing pain in the ear
Diagnosing Earaches
Accurate diagnosis is critical for effective treatment. Our specialists use:
- Audiology tests: to evaluate hearing function
- Imaging tests: magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) or computed tomography (CT) scans to identify structural issues or hidden infections
- Medical history review: identifying potential triggers, such as recent illnesses or injuries
- Physical examination: to assess the ear canal, eardrum, and surrounding areas
Treating Earaches
At Montefiore Einstein, treatment is personalized to address the root cause of the earache and may include:
- Ear cleaning: removing earwax, foreign objects or infected debris
- Medications: antibiotics, antifungal agents, corticosteroids or over-the-counter pain relievers
- Supportive care: lifestyle modifications, such as hydration and avoiding irritants, to promote healing
- Surgical options: In severe cases, such as chronic infections or structural damage, minimally invasive procedures may be recommended.
- Referrals: In cases of TMJ pain, we refer to outside physicians.
