What Are Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms?

Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) refer to a broad group of symptoms associated with a variety of urinary conditions, including:

  • Difficulty emptying the bladder
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Urinary frequency and urgency
  • Prostate issues and other related conditions

Causes of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

There is an extensive array of causes of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS), and diagnosis must be performed on a case-by-case basis to determine the exact cause(s) of the symptoms. Any type of infection, inflammation, abnormality or obstruction in the urinary system can lead to LUTS. Other medical conditions, including kidney disease, enlarged prostate, diabetes, obesity, hypertension and pelvic floor dysfunction, can also contribute to the condition.

Signs of Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Lower urinary tract symptoms include:

  • Frequent urination during the day and/or at night
  • Hesitancy during urination
  • Incomplete urination (dribbling)
  • Incontinence
  • Pain, discomfort or burning during urination
  • Weak urine flow

Diagnosing Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

In addition to a complete physical examination, your physician may order other diagnostic tests to pinpoint the cause of your LUTS. These tests may include:

  • Blood tests
  • Cystoscopy, which uses a small camera to capture a detailed picture of the bladder and urethra
  • Imaging tests to visualize the urinary tract in more detail
  • Urinalysis
  • Voiding tests to check bladder volume and pressure

Treating Lower Urinary Tract Symptoms

Treatment of LUTS depends on the underlying condition causing the symptoms and may include:

  • Lifestyle changes, (e.g. limiting fluid, alcohol and caffeine intake during the day or before bedtime)
  • Prescription medications
  • Surgical procedures
