What Is Nocturia?

Nocturia is a condition that causes a frequent need to urinate at night, leading to sleep deprivation and other health conditions. Nocturia is a common condition; according to the National Institutes of Health, one in three adults over the age of 30 experience nocturia; the incidence is even higher in adults over the age of 65. Nocturia is often underreported for a variety of reasons, including patient discomfort in discussing the condition.

Causes of Nocturia

Nocturia can be caused by an underlying health issue or lifestyle habit including:

  • Bladder storage and release problems
  • Behavioral habits, including urinating before the actual need arises
  • Certain medications
  • Drinking liquids before bedtime, especially caffeine and alcohol
  • Sleep disorders
  • Sleep apnea, insomnia and other sleep disorders

Underlying health conditions that may contribute to nocturia include:

  • Bladder blockages or reduced capacity
  • Childbirth
  • Diabetes
  • Edema
  • Heart disease
  • High blood pressure
  • Interstitial cystitis
  • Menopause
  • Overactive bladder
  • Pelvic prolapse, enlarged prostate and other prostate conditions
  • Restless leg syndrome

Signs & Symptoms of Nocturia

Symptoms of nocturia may include:

  • Waking up twice or more during the night to pee
  • Peeing more in volume if polyuria is present
  • Fatigue and sleepiness during the day due to an interrupted sleep cycle

Diagnosing Nocturia

Nocturia is diagnosed by evaluating underlying symptoms or causes with a physical exam and review of personal and family medical histories and lifestyle. Supplemental diagnostic tests include urinalysis, blood tests, bladder scans, cystoscopy and urodynamic testing.

Treating Nocturia

Treatment for patients with nocturia includes a wide range of therapies based on the severity and persistence of the condition as well as its underlying cause. Lifestyle and behavioral modification are typically offered as a first line of treatment. For patients whose condition doesn’t improve with these therapies, there are a variety of medications to address symptoms, including medication to help the kidneys produce less urine, treat bladder conditions and regulate urine production or high blood pressure. Treatment of the underlying condition (e.g. diabetes, enlarged prostate) is critical to relieving the symptoms of nocturia.
