Montefiore Ophthalmology Research Fellow Scholarship
The Montefiore Ophthalmology Research Fellow Scholarship enables medical students to become immersed in a high-impact research experience at a critical time during their professional education. The selected research scholars will work primarily with Anne Barmettler, MD, and Roy S. Chuck, MD, PhD, as well as other leading clinician scientists, at Montefiore Medical Center’s Department of Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences in conducting basic, translational or clinical research from June 1 to May 31.
Eligibility
The 12-month program is designed for students following completion of their second, third or fourth year of medical school. Research scholars are selected based on academic achievement. Although applicants may have prior research experience, students who have not previously been involved in research are encouraged to apply. Applications will be accepted from medical students inside and outside the United States. There are no citizenship requirements for applicants, but those who are not U.S. citizens must have and maintain an appropriate visa (all visa matters must be handled by the applicant). Montefiore Medical Center is committed to promoting diversity within the ophthalmic community, and we encourage medical students who are underrepresented in medicine groups to apply.
Stipend and Benefits
Research scholars receive the following benefits:
- $25,000 annual stipend
- Allowance of $5,000 to support travel expenses to present research work at a national meeting
Application Process
One research scholarship will be awarded annually. Each applicant must submit the following:
- Personal statement
- Curriculum vitae
- Official transcripts (undergraduate and medical school)
- Three letters of recommendation
- All application materials must be submitted to mkealy@montefiore.org by the February 15th deadline. Research scholarships will be awarded by March 1st.
Expectations
Research scholars are expected to assume responsibility for their research project during the year. This includes working closely with their mentor to refine the research aims and design, data collection, and data analysis. The research is expected to result in an original manuscript for submission to an appropriate peer-reviewed journal and a conference abstract submission. Research scholars will present their work at Montefiore Medical Center’s annual ophthalmology research meeting, the Paul Henkind Research Day.
