Montefiore Einstein Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences offers a wide range of research training and educational opportunities for individuals at every stage of their scientific and biomedical careers. Our research programs span the full spectrum of vision science, from uncovering disease mechanisms at the cellular and molecular level to developing novel diagnostic tools and pioneering therapeutic solutions for a wide array of ocular conditions.
Our Department has received multiple awards from institutions that include the National Eye Institute (NEI) and National Institutes of Health (NIH), reflecting our leadership in advancing ophthalmic research. Residents actively participate in faculty-mentored research projects throughout their training and have the opportunity to present their work at the annual Paul Henkind Day symposium, gaining valuable experience in clinical and laboratory investigation.

The Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences' education and training programs are committed to providing a comprehensive educational experience at the forefront of ophthalmic microsurgical innovation. We afford our trainees the opportunity to pursue world-renowned residency training that encompasses clinical service, research, advanced surgical skills and didactic learning, as well as specialized observership programs that provide firsthand exposure to patient care across the full spectrum of eye diseases. Programa de residencia
Montefiore Einstein Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences is home to one of the largest Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)–accredited ophthalmology residency programs in New York State. We deliver world-renowned residency training by a team of internationally recognized physicians with deep expertise, and we are a leader in innovative graduate medical education in all areas and major subspecialties of ophthalmology. Residents are provided extensive clinical and research opportunities, structured didactics and broad exposure to a wide range of ophthalmic conditions and pathologies, delivering eye care to one of the most diverse communities in the nation. Our state-of-the-art wet lab allows for early surgical training, and trainees benefit from a lecture portal for flipped-classroom learning. Our goal is to foster the careers of our trainees, preparing them for modern clinical practice and equipping them to become leaders in ophthalmic clinical care delivery and research.

Educational and training opportunities are available to medical students at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine as well as students from other medical schools, including a dedicated Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Observership Program. Designed for third- and fourth-year medical students, this Program provides firsthand exposure to clinical practice and patient care across the full spectrum of eye diseases.

Advancing Ophthalmic Surgery Through Innovation & Education
We developed EyeLecture.com, a unique, cloud-based learning management platform designed specifically for ophthalmology education. Created through a collaboration of students, residents and faculty under the leadership of Anurag Shrivastava, MD, this customizable solution allows educators and learners around the world to collaborate, share expertise and build dynamic training environments. Instructors can easily update content directly within the portal, ensuring that materials remain current and clinically relevant. Lectures can be augmented with interactive resources and made available anytime, anywhere, supporting flexible, on-demand learning. The platform enables institutions to custom-build curricula tailored to meet their specific training needs and educational goals.
Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences Research Fellow Scholarship
The Montefiore Einstein Ophthalmology and Visual Sciences Research Fellow Scholarship provides medical students with the opportunity to engage in a rigorous, high-impact research experience at a pivotal stage of their education. Over the course of 12 months, scholars work alongside internationally recognized clinician-scientists in our Department, contributing to basic, translational and clinical research. The Program is open to medical students who have completed their second, third or fourth year of training.
Ronald M. Burde Surgical Simulation Lab
Our flagship Ronald M. Burde, MD, Microsurgical Simulation Laboratory is one of the nation’s most advanced ophthalmic surgical training facilities, attracting residents, fellows and visiting surgeons from across the country and around the world. Housed within the Center for Ophthalmic Innovation (COIN), our Lab is equipped with 14 video-enabled microsurgical stations, five phacoemulsification platforms, surgical microscopes, interactive display systems and a dedicated conference and computer laboratory. Residents and trainees have round-the-clock access to practice complex procedures, including cataract surgery, corneal transplantation and intraocular maneuvers, using high-fidelity simulation platforms and three-dimensional (3D) virtual reality anatomy systems. The Lab’s remote mentoring capabilities allow for real-time guidance and continuous learning, providing the safest possible environment to develop and refine microsurgical skills before entering the operating room.
The Burde Laboratory is an integral part of our residency curriculum and reflects our deep commitment to surgical education and innovation. Residents begin their hands-on training in our state-of-the-art wet lab and continue to advance their techniques throughout the Program. Through COIN, our Department fosters collaboration among residents, faculty and device manufacturers to explore new microsurgical techniques, test emerging technologies and support the development of next-generation surgical tools. The Laboratory also serves as a community educational hub and innovation center, reinforcing our role as a national leader in ophthalmic surgical training and device development.

Program offerings at Montefiore Einstein are administered through the Montefiore Einstein Center for Continuing Professional Development (CCPD). Our Center is accredited by the Joint Accreditation for Interprofessional Continuing Education™ to provide continuing medical education for healthcare professionals.
