Bronx, NY — January 10, 2026 — Montefiore Einstein Orthopedic Surgery welcomed local high school students from the Bronx this morning for Bone Academy, an educational program designed to introduce young learners to careers in orthopedics and the broader health sciences.

Led by Dr. Alexa Karkenny, Dr. Catherine Mackey, and Dr. Raghav Badrinath, the program offered students an inside look at orthopedic medicine beyond the classroom. Participants engaged in hands-on workshops, learned about musculoskeletal health, and had the opportunity to ask thoughtful questions about medical training, career pathways, and day-to-day life in healthcare.

“Programs like Bone Academy are about opening doors,” said Dr. Alexa Karkenny, orthopedic surgeon at Montefiore Einstein Orthopedic Surgery. “Many of these students may not have had exposure to orthopedics or to medical careers in general. Giving them a chance to see what’s possible, and to picture themselves in these roles, is incredibly powerful.”

The event was made possible through the support of volunteers including surgical technologists, physician assistants, medical assistants, researchers, device sales representatives, and both orthopedic and podiatry faculty from Montefiore Einstein, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, CUNY School of Medicine, and OrthoPediatrics. Volunteers led interactive stations and shared personal insights about their education and professional journeys.

“Hands-on experiences are often what spark curiosity and confidence,” said Dr. Catherine Mackey, orthopedic surgeon at Montefiore Einstein Orthopedic Surgery. “We wanted students to walk away feeling inspired, informed, and encouraged, especially those who may be considering careers in medicine or health sciences for the first time.”

Bone Academy reflects Montefiore Einstein Orthopedic Surgery's ongoing commitment to community engagement, mentorship, and inspiring future healthcare professionals. The morning concluded with students expressing enthusiasm for what they learned and a deeper understanding of the many roles that contribute to patient care.

“It was a great morning of learning, mentorship, and inspiration,” Dr. Mackey added.
