Sir Moses Montefiore
Sir Moses Montefiore (1784–1885) was one of the most prolific businessmen, activists and philanthropists of his time. Born in Italy and raised in England, he amassed tremendous wealth during his career and used it for the benefit of others in his retirement. For more than 30 years, Sir Moses traveled widely, giving extensively of his time and fortune to lift up the Jewish people and other marginalized communities. In early 1884, a group of New York philanthropists, looking for a way to honor Sir Moses on his 100th birthday, established the original Montefiore—a hospital to care for all people in need. Today, Montefiore Medical Center continues that rich tradition, providing superlative healthcare for all those who need it.

Men who devote themselves to the help of their fellow men generally do so in one of two ways: they give either of their time or of their money. Sir Moses Montefiore was an outstanding example of a man who was able and willing to give both.
