January 9, 2025
Marco Antonio Fragoso, DVM, PhD, Dipl. ACVP, has joined Montefiore Einstein as the director of the Histology and Comparative Pathology Core Facility and assistant professor of Pathology at Montefiore Einstein, effective December 2, 2024.
Dr. Fragoso joins us from Berlin, Germany, where he served as a toxicologic pathologist and principal scientist at NUVISAN Innovation Campus Berlin. There, he specialized in microscopic evaluations of animal tissues, diagnostic assessments under Good Laboratory Practices, and advanced digital pathology research.
With a nuanced understanding of disease mechanisms across species and animal models, Dr. Fragoso bridges animal and human health in translational research. His extensive international experience includes pathology-focused roles in both Mexico and Germany, spanning diagnostics, toxicologic pathology, digital pathology, and innovative research. A skilled leader and collaborator, he has contributed to interdisciplinary projects and presented award-winning research at national and international conferences.
Dr. Fragoso holds a PhD in Veterinary Pathology from the Freie Universität Berlin, where his dissertation centered on developing convolutional neural networks to automate canine tumor diagnosis on digital slides. He also earned a Master of Veterinary Medicine specializing in anatomic pathology and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM). In 2023, Dr. Fragoso earned the status of Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Pathologists (ACVP).
As director of the Histology and Comparative Pathology Core Facility, Dr. Fragoso leads a team offering comprehensive histology services, including histopathology evaluations of laboratory animals and immunohistochemistry. His vision emphasizes leveraging innovative technologies to enhance diagnostic precision, foster collaboration, and advance translational research, all of which align with Montefiore Einstein's commitment to biomedical innovation.
“I look forward to advancing my career in academia and research while sharing my expertise with researchers from different fields of study, as well as medical and graduate students, said Dr. Fragoso. This marks his first professional experience in the United States, and he is eager to explore the rich culture and vibrant energy of the Bronx and New York City with Wolvie, his 7-year-old Labrador-Golden Retriever mix, who is happily along for the journey.
