Neuropsychological Assessment Services

About Our Program

Neuropsychological Assessment Services (NAS) are available through the Moses Outpatient Psychiatry Division at Montefiore Einstein. Our Services

Clinical neuropsychology is a specialty of psychology that focuses on the relationship between the brain and behavior. A clinical neuropsychologist has a doctoral degree in psychology, with at least two years of advanced training and experience in the science and practice of neuropsychology.

A neuropsychological evaluation involves an interview and a range of tests. The tests are typically pencil-and-paper tests and are standardized (meaning that they are given in the same manner for all patients). An individual’s test scores are interpreted by comparing them to those of healthy individuals of a similar age, education, gender and ethnic background, as well as the expected levels of functioning. In this way, a neuropsychologist can determine areas of strength or weakness.

Neuropsychological tests evaluate brain functioning in several areas, including:

  • Academic functioning
  • Attention
  • Emotional and psychological functioning
  • Executive functioning (e.g., planning, organization, abstraction, conceptualization)
  • Language
  • Memory
  • Speed of information processing
  • Visuospatial perception

Although individual scores are important, the neuropsychologist examines the test results to determine patterns that can assist with diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

A complete evaluation generally takes three to five hours, but it can take up to eight hours, depending on the complexity of the issues to be addressed and the patient’s condition. Occasionally, it is necessary to complete the assessment over two or more sessions.

The Attention, Memory & Frontal Abilities Screening Test (AMFAST)

AMFAST is a novel, 10-minute, paper-and-pencil measure developed to identify attention, processing speed, memory, and executive functioning deficits in children and adults with various conditions characterized by frontal-subcortical dysfunction. Learn more and download the test.
