What Is Pyeloplasty?
Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure performed to correct the blockage of urine flow from the kidney to the bladder in children and adults. This type of blockage can cause a build-up of fluid and subsequent swelling of the kidney, a condition known as hydronephrosis. Pyeloplasty is typically required when the ureter (the tube that drains urine from the kidney to the bladder) isn’t properly connected to the kidney or has an obstruction, leading to accumulation of urine in the bladder. If left untreated, this accumulation can cause infection and kidney damage.
What Are the Reasons to Perform a Pyeloplasty?
Pyeloplasty can be used to treat ureteropelvic junction obstruction (UPJO), which is a blockage of the flow of urine out of the kidney at the point where part of the kidney attaches to one of the ureters (tubes that carry urine from the kidney to the bladder). UPJO can be congenital or acquired and mostly occurs in young children. In older children and adults, UPJO may be the result of scar tissue, a crossing blood vessel, infection, prior treatments for a blockage, tumors or kidney stones.
What Are the Benefits of Pyeloplasty?
The aim of pyeloplasty of the UPJO is to provide symptomatic or pain relief, prevent repeated kidney infections and preserve remaining kidney function.
Types of Pyeloplasty
Pyeloplasty is a surgical procedure to remove or repair a blockage at the ureteropelvic junction (UPJ), reconnecting the healthy part of the kidney to the healthy ureter and restoring urine flow from the kidney. Pyeloplasty can be performed using open surgery and minimally invasive techniques.
- Laparoscopic pyeloplasty: a minimally invasive procedure with which a lighted scope armed with a camera is used to visualize the affected area. The procedure can be performed through one or more small incisions via transperitoneal or retroperitoneal approaches.
- Open pyeloplasty: a traditional pyeloplasty procedure using a large skin incision allowing direct access to the affected area
- Robot-assisted pyeloplasty: a minimally invasive technique in which the surgeon uses a robot to perform the procedure through one or more small incisions. This method offers the intraoperative benefit of 3D visualization, magnification of the operative field and improved dexterity and ergonomics.
