Tamar B. Nobel, MD, MPH, is an attending thoracic surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgery and Epidemiology and Population Health at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Nobel’s clinical focus centers on thoracic oncology, including minimally invasive surgery for lung and esophageal cancer. She is also interested in mediastinal and chest wall tumors, metastasectomy for lung metastases from other cancers, tracheal disorders and benign esophageal disease.
After obtaining her Bachelor of Medicine from Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine in 2014, Dr. Nobel completed a general surgery residency at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai. During her training, she completed two research years where she worked as a research fellow at Memorial Sloan Kettering while also completing a Master of Public Health and a board-certified preventive medicine residency. She continued her medical training at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, where she completed a cardiothoracic surgery fellowship in 2023 and an advanced thoracic surgical oncology fellowship in 2024.
Through a multi-disciplinary approach using translational science, health services research, process improvement and community outreach, Dr. Nobel uses an epidemiologic framework to examine and improve clinical outcomes for patients historically under-represented in current thoracic oncology research. Her work has been shared through numerous peer-reviewed publications, editorials and review articles, book chapters, posters and oral and invited presentations.
Dr. Nobel is board certified in Public Health and General Preventive Medicine and General Surgery. She is a member of several professional societies, including Women in Thoracic Surgery, the Society of Thoracic Surgeons and the American Association for Thoracic Surgery, among others. Through a career development award grant from Lungevity for a project called BRONx-TEAM, Dr. Nobel is increasing adjuvant therapy uptake among lung cancer patients at Montefiore Einstein through patient navigation.
