Akash Kumar, MD, is the GI Fellowship Associate Program Director, Medical Director, GI Cancer Screening Program and Assistant Professor, Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. Dr. Kumar is a specialist who treats patients with ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. He has clinical interests in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and general gastroenterology, including the treatment of conditions such as acid reflux and colon cancer screening.
In 2010, Dr. Kumar received his Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Brown University. He then attended the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2014. He continued at the institution for his postdoctoral training, completing his internal medicine residency in 2017 and his gastroenterology fellowship in 2020, taking on the role of Chief Gastroenterology Fellow in his final year.
Dr. Kumar’s research focus includes colon cancer, improving the quality of bowel preparation, and the natural history and prevention in IBD. He has shared his work in peer-reviewed journals, including in Gut and Gastroenterology, and through oral presentations, abstracts and poster presentations.
Dr. Kumar is board certified in Gastroenterology by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of several professional societies including the American Gastroenterological Association, the American College of Gastroenterology and the American Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy.
