Jerry Y. Chao, MD, MS, is an attending anesthesiologist and Associate Professor, Anesthesiology at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Chao’s clinical focus is pediatric anesthesiology with a particular interest in regional anesthesia and spinal anesthesia in infants.

After receiving his Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience from Brown University in 2002, Dr. Chao attended Mount Sinai School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2006. His postgraduate training included completing an intership in internal medicine at Beth Israel Medical Center in 2007, residency in anesthesiology at Mount Sinai Medical Center in 2010, and a fellowship in pediatric anesthesiology at Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital at Stanford in 2011. In 2016, he earned his Master of Science in clinical research methods at Albert Einstein College of Medicine.

Dr. Chao’s research focus is to expand knowledge of early anesthetic effects through observational studies utilizing the electroencephalogram (EEG) during anesthesia in infants and young children. The long-term goal of this research is to improve patient care and enhance safety for all children requiring anesthesia. Dr. Chao receives funding from a KL2 Mentored Career Development Award and has been the recipient of other research grant support. Dr. Chao has shared his research through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, abstracts, and national and regional presentations.

Dr. Chao is board certified and serves on national committees as a member of several professional societies including the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society for Pediatric Anesthesia and the Society for Neuroscience in Anesthesiology and Critical Care. In 2020, Dr. Chao was inducted into the Leo M. Davidoff Society in recognition of his excellence in medical student education.
