Dr. Joseph J. DeRose, Jr., graduated Summa Cum Laude from Georgetown University where he earned the Chapman Medal for the most outstanding student in Biology. He completed his MD degree at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa and received the Whipple award for the most outstanding student in Surgery.

Dr. DeRose completed his General Surgery Residency at Columbia-Presbyterian Medical Center and received the Blakemore Prize for Research upon graduation. He then completed a Cardiothoracic Surgery Fellowship at Columbia-Prebyterian Medical Center as well as a post-graduate fellowship in Robotic and Minimally Invasive Surgery at Columbia.

Dr. DeRose was appointed Director of Robotics in the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at St. Lukes-Roosevelt Hospital from 2001-2006. He joined the Montefiore Einstein Center for Heart and Vascular Care as Director of Minimally Invasive and Robotic Cardiac Surgery and Associate Professor of Cardiothoracic Surgery in October 2006.
