Alexander W. Peters, MD, MPH, is a pediatric surgeon at Montefiore Einstein and Assistant Professor, Surgery at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Peters provides the full range of pediatric and neonatal surgery services, including prenatal counseling for expecting families. He takes care of children of all ages, from premature infants to teenagers, and treats common problems such as appendicitis, hernias and gallbladder disease, as well as rare neonatal and congenital anomalies and childhood cancers. Dr. Peters offers the latest minimally invasive surgical technologies, including laparoscopy, thoracoscopy and robotic surgery. He takes a patient-centered approach and strives to ensure every patient and family receives the highest quality care with the best outcomes possible.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from Princeton University in 2008, Dr. Peters earned his Doctor of Medicine at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in 2015. Following this, he earned his Master of Public Health at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health in 2019. He then completed a general surgery internship at New York Presbyterian-Weill Cornell Medical Center in 2016, followed by his general surgery residency in 2022, where he was Chief Resident in his final year. In 2024, Dr. Peters completed a fellowship in pediatric surgery at the Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin and Medical College of Wisconsin.

Dr. Peters's research focuses on surgical innovation, minimally invasive surgery, robotic surgery, health economics, cost-effectiveness and public policy. He has contributed to global projects in countries such as India, Pakistan, Liberia, Mozambique and Bolivia. Dr. Peters has authored over 50 papers and book chapters, with publications in leading journals, including The New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA Surgery, Health Affairs, Surgery, BMJ Innovations and The Lancet Global Health. He has also shared his work through national and international invited lectures and presentations and has been a reviewer for the Journal of Diabetes Science and Technology and the ANZ Journal of Surgery.

Dr. Peters is board certified by the American Board of Surgery in General Surgery. He is a member of multiple national organizations, including the American Pediatric Surgical Association (APSA) and the American Academy of Pediatrics. He is a member of APSA’s New Technology Committee and also serves on the Robotic Surgery Steering Committee at Montefiore Einstein.
