The Sir Moses Society
Sir Moses Montefiore (1784–1885) was one of the most prolific businessmen, activists, and philanthropists of his time. Born in Italy and raised in England, he amassed tremendous wealth during his career and used it for the benefit of others in his retirement. For more than 30 years, Sir Moses traveled widely, giving extensively of his time and fortune to lift up the Jewish people and other marginalized communities. In early 1884, a group of New York philanthropists, looking for a way to honor Sir Moses on his 100th birthday, established the original Montefiore—a hospital to care for all people in need. Today, Montefiore Medical Center continues that rich tradition, providing superlative healthcare for all those who need it.
The Sir Moses Society honors Montefiore Einstein donors who make unrestricted gifts of $1,000 or more, which benefit the fund with the greatest need. We recognize their dedication by offering a range of benefits through membership in the Society. As priorities change, this type of funding gives us the flexibility to invest in the latest innovations in medical education, research, and patient care.
“Men who devote themselves to the help of their fellow men generally do so in one of two ways: they give either of their time or of their money. Sir Moses Montefiore was an outstanding example of a man who was able and willing to give both.”
