What Are Urinary Tract Infections?

A urinary tract infection (UTI) occurs when bacteria enter the urethra and travel to other parts of the urinary tract, causing inflammation and infection. UTIs can affect the bladder (cystitis), urethra (urethritis) or kidneys (pyelonephritis) and are often caused by Escherichia coli (E. coli), a bacterium found in the digestive tract.

Causes of Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are most commonly caused by bacterial infections, with E. coli responsible for up to 85%–90% of cases. Contributing factors may include poor hygiene, blockages in the urinary tract, structural abnormalities or underlying medical conditions that impair bladder function or urine flow.

Signs & Symptoms of Urinary Tract Infections

The symptoms of a UTI vary depending on the location and severity of the infection. Common signs include cloudy or foul-smelling urine, frequent urination and a persistent feeling of bladder fullness. Patients may also experience pain or burning during urination, abdominal or pelvic discomfort and fever or chills, especially in cases involving the kidneys. In some cases, UTIs may present without noticeable symptoms, particularly in older adults and young children.

Diagnosing Urinary Tract Infections

Urinary tract infections are diagnosed through urinalysis, which detects bacteria, white blood cells or blood in the urine. Additional diagnostic tools may include blood tests to evaluate kidney function and imaging studies, such as ultrasounds, to identify structural abnormalities or recurrent infection causes. These assessments guide the development of an effective treatment plan.

Treating Urinary Tract Infections

Treatment for UTIs depends on the severity and underlying cause of the infection:

  • Antibiotics: Oral antibiotics are the first-line treatment to eliminate the infection.
  • Increased fluid intake: Drinking plenty of water helps flush bacteria from the urinary tract.
  • Management of underlying conditions: Addressing structural abnormalities or blockages may require surgical intervention.
  • Pediatric care: For children, preventative antibiotics and regular follow-ups may be recommended to avoid complications.
