About Our Medical Student Rotations for the Emergency Medicine Elective
Fourth-year medical students who are interested in high-acuity urban emergency care are encouraged to apply for a visiting elective in Emergency Medicine (EM) at the Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore Einstein and NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi, which is affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine.
This four-week rotation offers an immersive clinical experience across our three main campuses:
- NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi, a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center
- Montefiore Einstein, Moses Campus, a high-volume tertiary referral center
- Jack D. Weiler Hospital, a tertiary care facility on the Einstein Campus, with high-acuity mixed patient care
Students work directly with residents and faculty, gaining experience in trauma resuscitation, medical and surgical emergencies, pediatric emergency care and procedural skills. They will also have access to bedside ultrasound, simulation workshops and structured case discussions. Participation in teaching conferences is expected and encouraged.
Why Choose Montefiore Einstein & NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi for Your EM Rotation?
Students working with residents training in our Emergency Department will gain invaluable exposure to undifferentiated, high-acuity patients in a dynamic safety-net setting, exposing them to the management of a broad spectrum of complex and emergent conditions. The medical student rotation offers the opportunity to work in specialized areas such as trauma bays, resuscitation rooms and pediatric emergency departments and develop critical skills across diverse patient populations.
As part of one of the largest and most diverse emergency medicine residency programs in the country, students will learn alongside residents in a collaborative environment that emphasizes bedside teaching and procedural competence. The curriculum is enriched through daily teaching rounds, weekly didactic sessions and multidisciplinary simulations, fostering both clinical excellence and team-based care.
