Emergency Medicine Education & Training
The Department of Emergency Medicine at Montefiore Einstein and NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi offers one of the most comprehensive academic environments in the country. Our commitment spans the full continuum of education—from medical students to fellows to faculty—rooted in clinical excellence, service and educational innovation.
We are committed to developing the next generation of academic and clinical leaders through our faculty development program, which supports promotion, scholarship and teaching excellence. The Program offers annual workshops and retreats, peer observation and teaching feedback, research mentorship and grant support, promotion pathways across academic tracks and wellness and leadership development initiatives.
Our educators are active at local, regional and national levels, with initiatives that include peer-reviewed curricular design and publication, leadership roles in the Council of Residency Directors in Emergency Medicine (CORD), Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) and American College of Emergency Physicians (ACEP), grant-funded education projects and interdepartmental collaborations, as well as hosting regional teaching, simulation and ultrasound symposia.
Residency Training
Our four-year Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME)-accredited Emergency Medicine Residency Program, established in 1975, is one of the largest and most diverse in the nation. Residents train at three high-volume, high-acuity campuses in the Bronx: NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi, Montefiore Hospital, Moses Campus and Jack D. Weiler Hospital, Einstein Campus.
With over 100,000 emergency visits per year at each site, residents gain unmatched clinical exposure across trauma, critical care, pediatrics, social emergency medicine and toxicology. We emphasize early responsibility, procedural excellence and systems-based care.
To support focused career development, our Residency offers customizable education tracks and mini-fellowships across an array of subspecialties that provide mentorship, dedicated elective time and opportunities to present at conferences, publish research and prepare for subspecialty fellowship or academic roles.
Emergency Ultrasound
We offer our physicians longitudinal bedside ultrasound training, credentialing and teaching experience to efficiently incorporate point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) into patient evaluation and management. Training takes place in a high-volume Level 1 trauma center and covers a wide variety of clinical pathology and applications for emergency ultrasound, including trauma, abdominal and cardiac emergencies, vascular access, ocular pathology and much more.
Simulation Education
The goal of our Jacobi Simulation Division is to encourage clinical excellence by creating a psychologically safe educational learning environment without compromising patient safety. Our Emergency Medicine residents gain significant exposure to simulation through monthly Grand Rounds simulations with participants from every year, as well as weekly postgraduate year (PGY) class-specific simulations. Simulation is an exciting adjunct to the robust clinical experience that allows our residents to practice their skills in a safe and collaborative environment.
Clinical Research
Our Department has a history of over 30 years of investigating critical topics in emergency medicine. Researchers in our Department have explored topics as diverse as the role of opiates and parenteral adjuncts in pain management, asthma management in the emergency department (ED), human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) screening, COVID-19 best practices, improvements in resident and community education and many other topics. Our research portfolio is as broad and wide as the discipline of emergency medicine itself. The clinical research track offers residents project development training, faculty mentorship and access to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), biostatistics and grant writing resources.
Biodesign & Innovation
Health technologies, including therapeutics, medical devices and digital tools, have significant potential to transform healthcare delivery and advance personalized medicine. Participants in this Program will gain valuable exposure to medical technology development, clinical validation and pilot implementation. They will also have opportunities to collaborate with the Albert Einstein College of Medicine Office of Biotechnology and Business Development to identify strategic partnerships at Montefiore Einstein, explore external funding options (such as foundation, federal and industry-based grants or external seed investments) and discover external opportunities for product development and sustainability (like the Entrepreneurship Lab NYC—ELabNYC accelerator, strategic partnerships and licensing opportunities).
Healthcare Administration & Policy
This track is designed to prepare physicians and healthcare professionals for leadership roles both within emergency departments and the broader healthcare system through involvement in departmental operations, quality improvement and hospital leadership. Our Program emphasizes this blend of clinical expertise, management skills and health policy acumen to produce leaders capable of driving operational innovation, advocating for policy improvements and ensuring the delivery of high-quality emergency care.
Residency Leadership & Management
Our leadership and management track is designed to prepare participants for future positions in academic and departmental leadership, with a special focus on mentorship in resident advising, recruitment, curricular design and academic governance. Our Program graduates are well-prepared for academic leadership roles, program director pathways and managerial positions in emergency medicine.
Fellowship Program
The Department of Emergency Medicine offers nationally recognized fellowship training for emergency medicine physicians seeking academic and clinical specialization. All fellowships include structured mentorship, teaching experience and opportunities for scholarship and leadership.
Our current fellowship offerings include:
- Emergency Ultrasound (NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi)
- Simulation Education (NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi)
- Pediatric Emergency Medicine (Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein and NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi)
- Clinical Research with an optional master’s degree (Montefiore Einstein)
Medical Student Rotations
As a core teaching site for Albert Einstein College of Medicine, we provide immersive clinical education for third- and fourth-year medical students. Opportunities include:
- Core emergency medicine selectives
- Fourth-year subinternships and visiting electives
- Simulation-based decision-making sessions
- Longitudinal mentorship and research support
Students rotate at all three sites and engage in a diverse range of patient care, with strong exposure to trauma, ultrasound and procedural training.
Novice Advanced Practice Provider Program
Our Program immerses advanced practice providers (APPs) into the full spectrum of emergency care—from urban populations to tertiary referral centers—providing exposure to complex medical and trauma cases, all within the expansive network of high-acuity settings of Montefiore Einstein. Our mission is to train highly skilled, compassionate and adaptable APPs in emergency medicine, preparing them to thrive in both academic and community emergency departments.
