Tadahisa Sugiura, MD, PhD, is an attending surgeon and Assistant Professor at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Sugiura’s clinical focus is in structural heart disease, coronary artery bypass surgery, the treatment of end-stage heart failure, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO), and cardiothoracic organ procurement.
Educated in Japan, Dr. Sugiura attended University of Tsukuba School of Medicine from 1997 to 2003, earning his Doctor of Medicine degree. He began his postdoctoral training with a residency at Tokyo Women’s Medical University from 2003 to 2005, followed by a residency at Seirei Hamamatsu General Hospital in Japan from 2005 to 2007. He then undertook a fellowship at Tokyo Women’s Medical University in 2008, followed by a fellowship at Yokohama City University Medical Center from 2009 to 2011. In 2012, he earned his PhD from Tokyo Women’s Medical University. Dr. Sugiura came to the United States in 2013 and continued his training, completing a research fellowship at Nationwide Children's Hospital, The Ohio State University in 2016. He was an advanced fellow at Texas Heart Institute at Baylor St. Luke’s Medical Center from 2016 to 2018 and a super fellow at Montefiore-Einstein from 2018 to 2019.
Dr. Sugiura’s research focuses on cardiac regenerative therapy, induced pluripotent stem cell (iPS cell) research and stem cell medicine. He has shared his research through publication in many peer-reviewed journals as well as book chapters, abstracts, posters and presentations. He is also an ad hoc reviewer for several publications including The Annals of Thoracic Surgery and Internal Medicine.
Dr. Sugiura is board certified and is a member of several professional societies including the Japanese Society for Thoracic Surgery, the Japanese Society for Cardiovascular Surgery and the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.
