Jay S. Berger, MD, PhD, is an attending physician and Associate Professor, Anesthesiology and Director of the Integration Course at Montefiore Einstein. He is also Course Director of the Integration Course at Einstein. Dr. Berger has extensive experience in Critical Care Medicine and Anesthesiology with expertise in perioperative pain management, mechanical ventilation in the ICU and solid organ transplantation postoperative care.

A graduate of Rutgers New Jersey Medical School and Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Dr. Berger attended the institution’s combined MD/PhD program, earning his Doctor of Philosophy in 2002 and his Doctor of Medicine in 2003. He began his postgraduate training at The Stamford Hospital, completing his general surgery internship in 2004 followed by a three-year anesthesiology residency at Rutgers - New Jersey Medical School. In 2008, Dr. Berger completed his clinical fellowship in critical care medicine at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital. He continues his education, currently pursuing his Master in Health Professions Education at Warner School of Education, University of Rochester.

With research interests spanning a broad range of topics including acute lung injury and repair, airway management and anesthetic management of patients undergoing cardiac surgery, Dr. Berger's work is widely published in peer-reviewed journals. He has also published work on the perioperative care of patients and the expansion of intensive care units during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Berger is board certified in Anesthesiology and Critical Care Medicine by the American Board of Anesthesiology. He is a member of the American Society of Anesthesiologists, the Society of Critical Care Anesthesiologists and New York State Society of Anesthesiologists. In 2021, he received the Leo M. Davidoff Society Award from Montefiore Einstein in recognition of his outstanding achievement in teaching.
