Elizabeth Gurney, MD, MPH, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor, Obstetrics & Gynecology and Women’s Health at Montefiore Einstein. Her clinical focus centers on complex contraception, long-acting reversible contraception and the management of unintended and abnormal pregnancy.
After obtaining her Bachelor of Arts in biochemistry and biology from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Gurney earned her Doctor of Medicine from New York University School of Medicine. She completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology at New York University School of Medicine, followed by a fellowship in family planning at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, where she also earned her Master of Public Health from the University of Pennsylvania.
Building on her clinical focus, Dr. Gurney’s research centers on immediate postpartum long-acting reversible contraception and improving patients’ experiences during office-based family planning procedures. She is also interested in adverse childhood experiences and pain during office procedures, doula support and abortion stigma. Her work has been published in many peer-reviewed journals, articles and abstracts, and she has given national oral presentations.
Dr. Gurney is doubly board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology in general Obstetrics and Gynecology and in Complex Family Planning. She is a fellow of Bellevue Obstetrical and Gynecological Society and the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. She is also a junior fellow of the Society of Family Planning and a member of the National Abortion Federation. In 2017, Dr. Gurney won the Faculty Award for Excellence in Resident Education from the Council for Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology at Einstein Medical Center Philadelphia. In 2018 she served as faculty mentor for an award-winning resident QI project, winning Best Abstract from the ACOG District III Junior Fellow Meeting in Philadelphia, PA.
