Yoram A. Puius, MD, PhD, is an attending physician, Associate Professor, Medicine and Associate Professor, Cardiothoracic & Vascular Surgery at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus centers on treating infections in the immunocompromised host, including recipients of solid organ transplants, patients with hematologic malignancies and recipients of cellular therapy.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Arts in physics from Cornell University in 1992, Dr. Puius earned his Doctor of Philosophy in biochemistry at Einstein in 1999, followed by his Doctor of Medicine in 2001. He moved to NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Cornell to complete his internal medicine residency in 2003 and an infectious diseases fellowship at NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia in 2006. Following this, Dr. Puius completed an additional year focusing on infectious in the immunocompromised host at Tufts Medical Center in 2007.

Building on his clinical focus, Dr. Puius’s research involves infections in left ventricular assist device recipients, heart transplant recipients and kidney transplant recipients. In addition, he is the architect of the online transplant infectious disease library, “transplantid.net” for the American Society of Transplantation. He is also involved in research on COVID-19-associated Mucormycosis. Dr. Puius’s work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, books, chapters and review articles, and he has presented abstracts and poster presentations nationally. He has been a reviewer for a number of journals and is on the editorial boards of Clinical Transplantation and Transplant Infectious Diseases.

Dr. Puius is board certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Society of Transplantation and the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation. He is also the Founding Chair of the Transplant Infectious Diseases Online Library Working Group for the American Society of Transplantation. In 2021, Dr. Puius was named Heart Failure & Transplant Consultant of the Year at Montefiore. He has also been named in Castle Connolly’s “Top Doctors” for multiple years.
