Benjamin Himes, MD, PhD, MHS, is an attending physician and Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at Montefiore Einstein. He specializes in cranial neurosurgical oncology, particularly in the treatment of intrinsic brain tumors in eloquent regions, including awake surgery with motor and speech mapping. Dr. Himes is particularly interested in the treatment of low-grade gliomas and glioblastoma. He also specializes in the treatment of metastatic disease to the brain, intraventricular tumors and extra-axial lesions including meningiomas. Dr. Himes has extensive experience with state-of-the-art surgical approaches, including the use of intraoperative ultrasound, 5-ALA, laser interstitial therapy (LITT) and radiosurgery.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 2008, Dr. Himes attended the Yale School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine and Master of Health Science in 2013. He completed his residency training at Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, in 2021 and his fellowship in neurosurgical oncology in 2022. During this time, Dr. Himes also completed a PhD through the Mayo Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences.

Dr. Himes leads a basic and translational research program centered on tumor-mediated immune suppression in glioblastoma. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, including Neuro-Oncology, Brain, and Journal of Neurosurgery. He also serves as a reviewer for a number of publications.

Dr. Himes is a member of several professional societies including the Society for Neuro-Oncology, American Association of Immunologists, the Congress of Neurological Surgeons and the International Society for Extracellular Vesicles.
