Fernando J. Camacho, MD, is Assistant Professor, Oncology & Hematology at Montefiore Einstein. He has over 30 years of experience in community oncology and is the former Director of Community Oncology at Montefiore Einstein Center for Cancer Care. This program was established to increase access to preventative and cutting-edge cancer care and research to Bronx and Westchester patients and families, particularly those from medically underserved communities, and enhance visibility of the Center for Cancer Care through education, outreach and community engagement.

After earning his Doctor of Medicine in 1973 from the State University of New York at Buffalo, Dr. Camacho completed an internal medicine internship and residency in 1976 at Montefiore Einstein, followed by a hematology fellowship which he completed in 1977. He then completed medical oncology and immunology fellowships at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Institute in 1979.

Dr. Camacho was the founding partner of a private community-based medical oncology practice with 5 physicians at two sites, providing in-patient consultations at hospitals affiliated with The New York City Research and Improvement Networking Group, which includes Montefiore Einstein and St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Yonkers. This group is the only practice-based research network in the United States focused exclusively on serving and providing care to the urban underserved.

Dr. Camacho has been recognized for services on behalf of the Black and Latino Students by The Student National Medical Association. He belongs to several medical organizations, most prominently being a member of the American Society of Medical Oncology for over 42 years. In 2007 he was honored with the Great Mentor in Medicine Award for inspiring minority students to succeed in the health professions. In 2021, he was recognized as Man of the Year by SHARE Cancer Support Group of New York for his support of women with cancer. Dr. Camacho has also been recognized on numerous occasions by Castle Connolly Medical LTD as a New York Metro Top Doctor.
