Alexander C. Small, MD, is an Attending Physician and Assistant Professor at Montefiore-Einstein. Dr. Small specializes in the treatment of urological diseases, cancer and kidney stones through the use of minimally invasive, robotic and endoscopic surgery.

After receiving his Bachelor of Arts from the University of Pennsylvania, Dr. Small attended Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, earning his Doctor of Medicine. He went onto his postdoctoral training at New York Presbyterian Hospital / Columbia University Medical Center, completing a general surgery internship followed by a urology residency, acting as chief resident in his final year. He then pursued his fellowship in advanced minimally invasive urology at Mount Sinai Hospital and Mount Sinai Beth Israel.

Dr. Small’s research focuses on the development of novel techniques for urological surgery and the use of technology to improve outcomes for patients with kidney stones and kidney cancer. With his colleagues, he has published over 30 papers in peer-reviewed journals, authored numerous book chapters and presented 60 abstracts at national and international conferences. Dr. Small is also a reviewer for the Journal of Urology, Urology Gold Journal and the International Journal of Surgical Oncology.

Dr. Small has received numerous awards including the Doris Duke Clinical Research Fellowship at Mount Sinai, the International Volunteers in Urology (IVUmed) Traveling Resident Scholar Award from the New York Section of the American Urological Association, and the Columbia University Mitchell Benson Research Award for clinical research accomplishments during his residency. He is a member of the American Urological Association.
