Vagish Hemmige, MD, is an attending physician at Montefiore Einstein and Director, Medical Student Research and Assistant Professor at our Albert Einstein College of Medicine. Dr. Hemmige’s clinical focus encompasses HIV primary care and specialization in preventing and treating infections in transplant recipients. He has a particular interest in helping people living with HIV with advanced kidney, liver, heart or lung disease navigate the process for transplantation.
In 2002, Dr. Hemmige graduated from Harvard University, receiving his Bachelor of Arts in physics. He then attended New York University School of Medicine, earning his Doctor of Medicine in 2006. He pursued his postgraduate training at the University of Chicago, completing his residency in internal medicine in 2009 and his fellowship in infectious diseases and global health in 2012. In 2014, Dr. Hemmige completed his Masters in Health Studies at the University of Chicago.
Dr. Hemmige’s research leverages large national databases to study how to improve the care of patients receiving transplants, with a particular focus on people living with HIV. He has shared his work through peer-reviewed journals, book chapters, review articles and abstracts. Dr Hemmige is also an ad-hoc reviewer for Epidemiology and Infection, Open Forum Infectious Diseases and Transplantation.
Dr. Hemmige is board certified in Infectious Diseases by the American Board of Internal Medicine. He is a member of the Infectious Diseases Society of America, the American Society of Transplantation and the International Society of Heart and Lung Transplantation.
