Shane Mario André Drakes, MBBS, is Program Director, Sports Medicine Fellowship and Assistant Professor, Rehabilitation Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. His clinical focus centers on non-surgical treatment of musculoskeletal and sporting injuries. He uses ultrasound technology for injury evaluation and guidance when performing various procedures on musculoskeletal injuries. Dr. Drakes is also interested in injury prevention and patient education.

After obtaining his Bachelor of Medical Sciences in basic medical sciences from the University of the West Indies in Mona, Jamaica in 2004, Dr. Drakes earned his Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery at the University of the West Indies in Cave Hill, Barbados in 2006. He then came to Montefiore, where he completed his preliminary general surgery internship in 2011 and his physical medicine and rehabilitation residency in 2014. Dr. Drakes remained at Montefiore to complete a sports medicine fellowship in 2015.

Building on his clinical focus, Dr. Drakes’ research focuses on injury epidemiology and mechanisms. He is also interested in interventions to assess injury risks and the prevention of injuries, and evidence-based recommendations on best injury treatment modalities. His work has been published in a number of peer-reviewed journals and presented nationally and internationally.

Dr. Drakes is board certified in Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation and Sports Medicine by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a member of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine, the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation and the Barbados Sports Medicine Association. In 2013, Dr. Drakes received the Montefiore Resident of the Year Award from the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency Program. He was also named as the Attending of the Year by that Residency Program in 2020. He has experience working with athletes at the high school, collegiate and professional/elite levels. Dr. Drakes was a team physician for the Barbados team at the Commonwealth Games in Australia in 2018 and is currently a team physician for the New York City Football Club.
