What Is Sinusitis?

Sinusitis refers to inflammation or swelling of the tissue lining the sinuses. This condition can block normal drainage, leading to discomfort and infection. Sinusitis may be acute, lasting a short period or chronic, persisting for 12 weeks or longer despite treatment.

Causes of Sinusitis

Sinusitis can result from a variety of factors, including:

  • Allergies and pollutants: exposure to allergens or irritants, such as pollen, dust or smoke
  • Infections: viral, bacterial or fungal infections that cause swelling or blockage
  • Medical conditions: asthma, immune disorders or frequent colds that predispose individuals to sinus inflammation
  • Structural abnormalities: conditions like a deviated septum or nasal polyps that obstruct sinus drainage

Signs & Symptoms of Sinusitis

Common symptoms of sinusitis include:

  • Facial pain or pressure, especially around the eyes, nose or forehead
  • Fatigue or fever, in severe cases
  • Headache or earache
  • Loss of sense of smell or taste
  • Persistent nasal congestion or thick nasal discharge

If symptoms last over 10 days or worsen, professional evaluation is recommended.

Diagnosing Sinusitis

Our specialists use advanced diagnostic tools to identify the type and severity of sinusitis. Diagnostic methods include:

  • Allergy testing: identifying triggers that may contribute to sinus inflammation
  • Imaging tests: computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans to assess sinus structure and detect blockages
  • Physical examination: evaluation of symptoms and nasal passages

Treating Sinusitis

Treatment for sinusitis is customized based on its cause and severity. Options include:

  • Lifestyle adjustments: strategies to manage allergies and improve sinus health
  • Medications: antibiotics, decongestants and corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and address infections
  • Nasal irrigation: saline rinses to clear sinuses and relieve congestion
  • Surgical options: minimally invasive endoscopic sinus surgery to remove blockages, improve drainage and restore sinus function in chronic or severe cases

Our comprehensive approach ensures effective relief and long-term management.
