Signs & Symptoms of Altered Smell & Taste Sensation
People who experience altered smell and taste sensation either experience a decrease in their ability to smell or a change in the way they perceive odors.
Diagnosing Altered Smell & Taste Sensation
Altered taste and smell are typically diagnosed with a complete physical exam, evaluation of symptoms and a review of your medications. You may be referred to an otorhinolaryngologist (ENT) who will administer a range of taste and smell tests. Depending on your symptoms, additional diagnostic tests may include a computed tomography (CT) scan or magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of your head and brain to identify cysts, tumors or other conditions.
Treating Altered Smell & Taste Sensation
Treatment for altered smell and taste depends on the underlying condition, such as changing a supplement or medication that may be affecting taste. Your physician may also order specific smell and taste tests to pinpoint the cause and severity of your condition.
