Samuel Sigal, MD, is Clinical Director, Hepatology and Professor, Clinical Medicine at Montefiore Einstein. A key member of the Liver Transplant Program at Montefiore Einstein, Dr. Sigal is a Transplant Hepatologist specializing in all areas of liver disease, including acute and chronic hepatitis, cirrhosis and its complications.

After graduating from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, Dr. Sigal pursued residencies in pathology at the University of Pennsylvania and in medicine at St. Luke’s Hospital. He continued his postgraduate training with fellowships in gastroenterology at Einstein and hepatology at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.

Dr. Sigal’s research focuses on the treatment of viral hepatitis and complications of cirrhosis. He has participated in many pivotal clinical studies that led to important advances in the management of chronic hepatitis C, hepatic encephalopathy and hepatorenal syndrome.

After joining Montefiore in 2015, Dr. Sigal identified an important unmet medical need in the Bronx community: screening for hepatitis B in the Bronx West African Community. Over the past 5 years, he has developed a dynamic and well-received educational outreach program for the community that has progressively expanded to include screening, vaccination and integration of its members into the U.S. healthcare system.
