What Is a Vasectomy Reversal?

A vasectomy reversal is a procedure to restore the flow of sperm in adult males who have undergone a vasectomy. During a vasectomy reversal, a surgeon reconnects the tubes (known as the vas deferens) that carry sperm from the testicle to the penis. A successful vasectomy reversal allows for the presence of sperm in the semen, helping to restore male fertility. There are a number of factors that affect whether a reversal is successful, including the amount of time that has passed since the original vasectomy procedure and any pre-existing fertility conditions.

Types of Vasectomy Reversals

The two primary approaches to vasectomy reversal are:

  • Vasovasostomy: The tubes that carry sperm from the testicle to the penis (vas deferens) are sewn back together.
  • Vasoepididymostomy: The vas deferens is connected directly to the organ that stores sperm (epididymis). This approach is used when a vasovasostomy is not a viable option or is unlikely to be successful.

What to Expect from a Vasectomy Reversal

Your doctor will conduct a comprehensive physical examination and review your medical history. Tests to assess your and your partner’s fertility health may also be ordered. Vasectomy reversal is typically an outpatient procedure, performed under local or general anesthesia.
