What Is an Ear Infection?
An ear infection is an inflammation of the middle ear caused by bacteria or viruses. The infection often results in fluid buildup behind the eardrum, leading to pain, swelling and other symptoms.
Causes of Ear Infections
Ear infections can develop due to:
- Allergies: causing inflammation and fluid buildup in the ear
- Eustachian tube dysfunction: blockage in the tubes connecting the middle ear to the upper throat
- Structural abnormalities: such as a cleft palate, which can increase the risk of ear infections
- Upper Respiratory infections: germs from colds or sinus infections spreading to the ear
Signs & Symptoms of Ear Infections
Symptoms of an ear infection can include:
- Difficulty hearing
- Ear pain, ranging from mild to severe
- Fever
- Fluid drainage from the ear
- In children: crying, pulling at the ears, difficulty sleeping and irritability
Chronic or recurrent ear infections may result in more persistent symptoms, including hearing loss or balance issues.
Diagnosing Ear Infections
Our specialists use advanced diagnostic methods to accurately identify and treat ear infections, including:
- Hearing tests: to evaluate potential hearing loss caused by the infection
- Imaging: In complex cases, computed tomography (CT) scans may be used to examine structural abnormalities in the ear.
- Otoscopy: a physical examination of the ear using a lighted instrument to detect signs of infection or fluid buildup
Treating Ear Infections
Treatment plans are tailored to the patient’s age, medical history and severity of symptoms. Options include:
- Home care: warm compresses and rest to alleviate discomfort
- Medications: over-the-counter pain relievers, antibiotics or corticosteroid ear drops
- Surgical intervention: In recurrent cases, minimally invasive surgery to insert ear tubes can help drain fluid and prevent future infections.
