Observership for Medical Students & External Residents
Montefiore Einstein Anesthesiology offers observership opportunities for medical students and external residents, providing broad exposure and immersive observation across a range of treatments and techniques.
How to Apply
To apply for an anesthesiology observership, identify and reach out to a supervising physician in your subspecialty of interest. Attending anesthesiologists in each of our subspecialities can be found on our Team page.
After receiving confirmation from the faculty member, email your CV and requested observership dates to Debbie Lopez, Anesthesiology Graduate Medical Education Administrator, at: deblopez@montefiore.org.
Please note there will be a formal onboarding process with Montefiore Einstein's House Staff Office for all observerships.
We welcome applications from both internal and external residents.
Anesthesiology Clerkship
We offer a one-month elective clerkship for fourth-year medical students, during which they each become an integral part of our anesthesiology team. Upon completion of this clerkship, medical students gain extensive skills, learning how to:
- Perform preoperative evaluations for American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA) Class 1 and Class 2 patients
- Develop simple anesthetic plans under the guidance of an attending physician or senior resident
- Place intravenous (IV) catheters and manage airways under the guidance of an attending physician or senior resident
- Fluently discuss anesthetic agents and their respective pharmacology
- Gain a deeper understanding of the professional role of an anesthesiologist
During our Anesthesiology Clerkship, students also gain exposure to different anesthesiology subspecialties—including neuro, regional, obstetric and pediatric anesthesia—and develop a foundational understanding of each specialized area. Students are taught to perform essential procedures, including IV placement, bag-valve-mask ventilation, supraglottic airway device placement and intubation.
How to Apply for Anesthesiology Clerkship
The Albert Einstein College of Medicine uses the AAMC Visiting Student Application Service (VSAS) for students seeking to participate in clinical away electives during their fourth year of medical school. This program is specifically for fourth-year medical students applying for elective courses at other medical schools.
The Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC)’s VSAS program is the primary platform for Albert Einstein College of Medicine students to apply for visiting student electives. This program facilitates the application process for students seeking short-term learning opportunities at other institutions.
Application Process:
All fourth-year students must apply for electives through VSAS. Approval, scheduling, and notifications are managed through the VSAS website.
Application Deadlines:
Elective requests should be submitted as early as possible, ideally at least 60 days before the desired start date.
