Message from the Chair: Dr. Matthias Eikermann

The Montefiore Einstein Department of Anesthesiology is dedicated to advancing the fields of surgery, medicine, critical care and pain therapy. As a partner across the health system, we prioritize patient satisfaction and consistently utilize data-driven decisions to optimize our patients care throughout the perioperative period.

In partnership with our colleagues in surgery and medicine, we ensure our patients receive the highest quality of integrated care. Through the Anesthesiology Digital Health Laboratory’s artificial intelligence-based screenings and prediction models, we identify the optimal setting for patients’ surgery and ensure continuity of care until discharge. Traditionally, anesthesiologists have served their patients and surgeons in the operating room only. Now, we have elevated our vision to support our patients throughout their perioperative journey from case booking to successful hospital discharge.

Through research and innovation, Montefiore Einstein Anesthesiology creates and implements new advancements in the science of perioperative medicine. We are a nationally recognized center of academic excellence and support our researchers at every stage of their process for both clinical trials and retrospective studies. With an extensive digital health network, our researchers continually work to improve postoperative outcomes, such as reducing pain and delirium and increasing rates of postsurgical independent living.

Our clinician-scientists are dedicated to advancing academic anesthesiology and training future leaders in research, perioperative medicine and critical care medicine. Consistent with this goal, our faculty members mentor and teach our trainees to become leaders in quality improvement so that we can further improve future patient outcomes.

Every day, our faculty, residents, fellows, nurse anesthetists and support staff provide equitable care to all patients across the health system in collaboration with surgeons, gastroenterologists, cardiologists, radiologists, neurologists and many others. As we continue to expand our scope within perioperative medicine, we have attracted a highly trained group of clinicians who prioritize the health and safety of the Bronx community and beyond.
