What Is Penile Trauma?

Penile trauma refers to any injury to the penis, ranging from minor contusions or lacerations to more severe conditions such as penile fractures or avulsions. These injuries can occur due to accidents, sports activities, sexual activity, or direct impact to the penis. Severe trauma may result in immediate pain, swelling, and functional loss, requiring urgent medical attention to prevent complications.

Causes of Penile Trauma

Penile trauma is most commonly caused by blunt force or penetrating injuries. Common causes include accidents during physical activities, forceful bending of the erect penis during sexual activity, or direct impacts such as falls or blows from heavy objects. Severe cases, such as avulsion or amputation, typically result from sharp trauma, assaults, or industrial accidents.

Signs & Symptoms of Penile Trauma

The symptoms of penile trauma vary depending on the severity of the injury. Common signs include immediate pain, bruising, and swelling of the penis. Patients may also experience blood in the urine or at the tip of the penis, painful urination, and a popping or cracking sound at the time of injury. In cases of penile fracture, there is often an immediate loss of erection.

Diagnosing Penile Trauma

Diagnosing penile trauma involves a thorough physical examination and a review of the patient’s symptoms and medical history. Imaging tests, such as ultrasound, MRI, or retrograde urethrogram, are often used to confirm the diagnosis and evaluate the extent of the injury. These tests help assess damage to soft tissues, blood vessels, or the urethra, guiding the appropriate treatment approach.

Treating Penile Trauma

Treatment for penile trauma depends on the type and severity of the injury:

  • Mild injuries: Minor contusions or lacerations can be managed with rest, ice application, over-the-counter pain relievers and proper wound care.
  • Penile fracture: Surgery is typically required to repair the tear in the tunica albuginea (the protective fibrous sheath of the penis) and any associated damage.
  • Penile avulsion or amputation: Severe cases require immediate surgical care to reattach or reconstruct the penis, restoring both function and appearance.
