Emergency Medicine Residency

About Our Program

The Emergency Medicine Residency Program at Montefiore Einstein and NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi ranks among the oldest and most respected emergency medicine training programs in the nation. Established in 1975, it is recognized for its high-acuity clinical exposure, dedication to underserved communities and a culture that encourages leadership, scholarship and service.

Clinical Training Across Three High-Volume Sites

Residents rotate among three distinct campuses in the Bronx, each providing unique learning environments:

  • NYC Health + Hospitals | Jacobi is a public hospital and a Level I Adult and Level II Pediatric Trauma Center. It features the Bronx’s only Burn Unit, a regional Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Center and a Snakebite Treatment Center. Jacobi is also a designated ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) and Primary Stroke Center, handling over 108,000 annual emergency department (ED) visits.
  • Montefiore Hospital, Moses Campus is a tertiary care academic hospital and a Comprehensive Stroke Center that manages over 138,000 emergency department visits each year. It is home to the Children’s Hospital at Montefiore Einstein (CHAM), a leading pediatric facility with a dedicated pediatric ED and fellowship programs.
  • Jack D. Weiler Hospital, Einstein Campus is a 403-bed tertiary care facility featuring a mixed adult and pediatric emergency department, offering residents early exposure to high-acuity cases and a robust interventional cardiology program.

Curriculum & Training Philosophy

Our four-year Residency Program emphasizes progressive responsibility, allowing residents to gain increasing autonomy each year. The curriculum includes rotations in trauma, critical care, pediatrics, toxicology and more, across various clinical settings. Residents also participate in simulation training, point-of-care ultrasound and evidence-based medicine.

Subspecialty & Fellowship Opportunities

Our Residency Program offers significant advantages for both our residents and the Montefiore Einstein healthcare network. Fellows gain deep, focused training, greater proficiency in managing complex cases, increased autonomy and enhanced clinical confidence. Our Program develops high-level expertise through our fellowship opportunities, including advanced training and mentorship in the following specialized areas of emergency medicine:

  • Emergency ultrasound
  • Simulation education
  • Pediatric emergency medicine
  • Clinical research (with the opportunity to pursue a master’s degree)

Community & Alumni Network

With nearly 700 alumni since 1975, graduates have become leaders in various settings, from academic centers to global health initiatives.
