Undergraduate Shadowing

Mentoring in Medicine

Mentoring in Medicine (MIM) addresses healthcare disparities in urban communities by helping to increase the diversity of the healthcare workforce. MIM starts working with students at a very young age. The program pairs healthcare professionals with socioeconomically disadvantaged students from third grade through health professional school.

MIM’s mission is multifaceted:

  • To ignite students’ interest in health careers
  • To help them execute a strategic plan for success
  • To support students currently enrolled in health professional school so that they can successfully graduate
  • Upon graduation, to assist them in early career development.

MIM also provides observational and clinical experiences. These include:

  • 40 hours of volunteering at Montefiore Emergency Department
  • 20 hours of shadowing board-certified emergency medicine physicians
  • 20 hours of community service
  • An individual strategic planning and mock interviewing session with MIM’s founder and director, Lynne Holden, MD.
