Diagnostic Radiology Residency: Conferences and Didactics

Residents receive extensive training through didactic, case-based, and mixed conferences. Conferences are given by attending physicians (and some fellows) from all divisions on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, providing a rich learning environment for each resident. Residents may participate in the following:

  • Three daily teaching conferences; considered protected educational time
  • Weekly "Interesting Case Conference"
  • "Brandt and Helms club"
  • Physics lecture series given every 1-2 weeks
  • A week-long MRI physics course (PGY-2 and PGY-3 residents)
  • Bi-monthly Radiologic-Pathologic Correlation Conference” in conjunction with the Department of Pathology
  • Radiology | Business | Economics – dedicated Spring lecture series
  • “Works-in-Progress” – Resident research updates, with a focus on training in research design and clinical research methodology
  • Monthly Quality Improvement conference
  • Monthly “Grand Rounds” presentation from a distinguished guest lecturer
  • Monthly journal club conference where each first-year resident has the opportunity to present an article.
  • “Radiology 101” – First year introduction to departmental operation, patient safety and image interpretation

Many rotations will have specific interdisciplinary conferences as well, including:

  • Pediatrics: weekly pediatric surgery conference; weekly pediatric tumor board, monthly joint pediatrics GU conference
  • MSK: weekly sarcoma conference
  • Chest: various weekly joint cardiology conferences
  • Neuro: daily neuroradiology/neurology rounds, ENT tumor board, ENT/Neurology Grand Rounds
  • VIR: weekly liver and oncology tumor boards
  • Mammography: monthly tumor board

Additionally, residents attend several external conferences, including:

  • New York State Radiological Society meetings held monthly during the winter and spring.
  • Advanced Interventional Management (AIM) Symposium (senior residents) held in New York each fall.
  • Senior residents are given protected time to attend the Radiological Society of North America (RSNA) Annual Meeting in Chicago.
