A Founding Gift to Support the New York Center for Rare Diseases

Steven Mah and Melissa Howard demonstrate their vision for the study of rare diseases with a planned gift to establish an endowed chair at the New York Center for Rare Diseases (NYCRD)

Steven is a former scientist and investment banker in the healthcare field who saw a need that wasn’t being met. He and his wife, Melissa, a former educator, realized that they could contribute in a meaningful way to the future of the scientific enterprise by supporting the study of rare diseases with a gift from their estate. Steven knows from his work in the healthcare space that their support of the study of rare diseases would make a genuine difference for real people who are essentially underrepresented in healthcare.

“Pharmaceutical companies and government entities are not inclined to fund the study of rare diseases because they are chasing returns on investment,” he says. Melissa and Steven decided to invest in the future at Einstein after visiting the lab and speaking with the people at Einstein who are conducting cutting edge research.

“We both believe that we can make a more significant contribution by supporting an underserved area of research,” notes Steven. “The work that will be done at NYCRD and at its collaborating institutions will help contribute to the treatment of all diseases well into the future.”
