New York City, NY (August 30, 2010) - Ellise Delphin, MD, MPH, has been appointed Unified Chairman of the Department of Anesthesiology at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine of Yeshiva University.

Dr. Delphin's distinguished academic career includes, most recently, seven years as Professor and Chair of the Department of Anesthesiology at UMDNJ-New Jersey Medical School and Chief of Service at the school's University Hospital.

"Montefiore has built world-class clinical programs across disciplines," said Steven M. Safyer, MD, President and CEO of Montefiore.   "Dr. Delphin brings a crucial complement to our state-of-the-art specialty care.  She is a leader determined to advance our cutting edge anesthesia services and shape a top-tier Anesthesiology Department."

"Dr. Delphin brings to Einstein both professional enthusiasm and an administrative history of success," said Allen M. Spiegel, MD, the Marilyn and Stanley M. Katz Dean of Einstein.  "That's the perfect combination to help us cultivate a nationally recognized residency program in Anesthesiology and to inspire innovative research initiatives, as well."

Dr. Delphin taught for 19 years at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, and held various increasingly responsible positions in anesthesiology at Columbia Presbyterian Medical Center, including Medical Director, Cardiothoracic Intensive Care Unit; Director, Cardiothoracic Anesthesiology; and Executive Director, Operating Rooms.

"One priority of mine is to broaden the expertise of the existing anesthesiology department and to assemble the highest caliber team of anesthesiology specialists in pediatrics, cardiology, cancer and pain," she said.  "Other departmental priorities include the development of vibrant residency and research programs."

Dr. Delphin's clinical research interests include thoracic anesthesia, lung volume reduction surgery and protective ventilation.

She plans to establish a regional Pain Service at Montefiore, not only for patients suffering acute pain in the hospital, but for patients needing chronic care in an outpatient setting.

Dr. Delphin earned her medical degree at Columbia University, College of Physicians and Surgeons in 1975.  She has an MPH in Health Policy and Management Services from Columbia University's School of Public Health, awarded in 1993.

She is a board member of the Society of Cardiovascular Anesthesiologists Foundation; an executive committee member of the New Jersey State Society of Anesthesiologists; and a member of the Society of Academic Anesthesiology Chairs.

Dr. Delphin has been the principal investigator in numerous clinical trials.  She has written dozens of articles in peer review journals and chapters on anesthesiology in medical textbooks.
