Professional Training Programs
Otorhinolaryngology: Year 2
The resident divides his/her duties amongst the basic sciences, ambulatory sites, hospital units and operating rooms. In his/her training he/she is carefully supervised by the attending physicians and the more senior residents. His/her rotations are split evenly between the 4 major campus locations. There are 4 weeks of vacation.
In the ambulatory sites he/she is instructed in the methods which are used in performing a comprehensive otolaryngologic physical examination. The differential diagnosis and the therapeutic plan will be discussed with the attending that will supervise all clinic sessions. Emphasis will be placed on learning appropriate preoperative assessment.
On the in-patient services, he/she is responsible for the initial examination, work-up, and discharge summary for all Otolaryngology admissions. The resident learns appropriate postoperative care for all types of surgical patients.
In the operating room he/she assists at major and minor operations and performs various procedures, such as tracheotomy, myringotomy, adenotonsillectomy, nasal surgery, basic sinus procedures, and adult endoscopy procedures. He/she becomes familiar with the use of the operating microscope and endoscopes.
All residents are required to attend a series of lectures on the fundamentals of otolaryngology and otolaryngology emergencies during the summer of their first year.
In addition to participating in the academic courses described as part of the participating institutions, the resident attends the AECOM Department of Otolaryngology Basic Science Course given at Montefiore Medical Center (MMC), and attends the introductory temporal bone course at MMC. A soft tissue surgical course is also given during the summer months at the MMC lab to teach all junior residents the correct handling of tissues. He/she participates in the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery (AAO-HNS) Patient Management Problem and Home Study Course. Residents are required to take the Annual Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery Examination (AOHNSE) each year of their training.
