Dr. Mark Thomas PM&R Training Fund

Fund 1

Everyone,

It is with mixed emotions that I announce the retirement of Mark Thomas, MD, from the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine. Although I will miss him greatly, I am pleased that he will be able to spend more time with his family.

Dr. Thomas has been the bedrock of our residency program for the last 30 years. He has been a mentor, counselor, inspiration, and guiding light for generations of Rehabilitation Medicine house officers, who are indebted to his determination and enthusiasm for teaching and shaping young physiatrists. Under Dr. Thomas’ leadership, the residency program has become one of the largest training programs in the nation. In addition to the previously established Core Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Residency and Pediatric Rehabilitation Medicine Fellowship programs, Dr. Thomas also established the Pain and Sports Medicine ACGME-accredited training programs and the nonaccredited cardiac and women’s health fellowships.

Over the years, nearly 300 trainees have graduated from the residency and fellowship programs and have become leaders in rehabilitation medicine. A hallmark of Montefiore Rehabilitation Training Program graduates is their emphasis on patient care and service, which reflects Dr. Thomas’ exceptional values and professional ethics. He taught trainees to provide respectful and compassionate care for patients with amputations, bracing needs, chronic pain, and disability.

In recognition of the generations of physiatrists that Dr. Thomas has trained and mentored, I am pleased to announce the creation of the Dr. Mark Thomas PM&R Training Fund and ask for your support. Your gift will support residents and fellows with greatly needed assistance for international missions, conference travel, wellness programming, and discretionary funding to improve the overall training experience.

It is fitting that we send Dr. Thomas off with the promise to uphold his legacy of creating opportunities for tomorrow’s physiatrists. I hope you will participate in this effort by making a gift in his honor.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Thomas on a remarkable career and in wishing him well on his next chapter.

With thanks,

Matthew Bartels Signature
