Alzheimer's disease research at Montefiore
Individuals aged 65 and older are one of the fastest growing segments of the American population. The Division of Geriatrics at Montefiore Medical Center offers a variety of treatments and services to help older adults in our community meet the challenges of aging, including Alzheimer's disease.
Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of dementia. It affects people’s memory, thinking and behavior, and it often progresses to the point where it affects their daily activities and functions. Alzheimer’s disease currently has no cure, but doctors have had some success in helping people maintain mental function, control behavior, and slow the progression of the disease through prescribed medications. Other therapies that may play a role in slowing the progress of early-onset Alzheimer’s disease include physical activity, cardiovascular and diabetes treatments, antioxidants, and cognitive training. A number of studies are ongoing in this area, and researchers are learning new things about Alzheimer’s disease every day.
